Art

Art is part of our Monday homeschool program in Lakewood Ranch. Led by Ms. Lauren, who holds a degree in early childhood art education. Older students learn the history behind a style before creating in it. Younger artists build fine motor skills through process art that usually begins with a story.

From the classroom

The hidden strawberry

After reading a story about a mouse searching for a strawberry, the younger classes made art where the strawberry stayed hidden until a flashlight found it, with a mouse giving chase.

Art with a history

Before trying a new style, upper grades learn where it came from and the artists behind it, then create their own work in that style.

What kids do

  • Explore clay, mosaic tiling and grouting, cloth, chalk pastels, watercolor, acrylics, paint pens and foil press
  • Learn the history and artists behind a style
  • Create original work in that style
  • Start younger projects from a book read together

Skills they build

  • Creativity
  • Fine motor skills
  • Art history
  • Color mixing
  • Self-expression

How it grows with your child

Mommy & Me, PreK + K/1

Developmentally focused process art. Each step builds skills like scissor work, peeling and placing small pieces, gluing, tracing and painting within regions, with lots of color exploration and mixing. Projects usually begin with a book read together first, so art and literature go hand in hand.

Upper Elementary + Middle Grades

A survey of mediums and expression: clay, mosaic tiling and grouting, cloth, chalk pastels, watercolor, acrylics, paint pens, foil press and more. Students study the history and artists behind a tradition, then create in that style.

How it connects

Pairing art with stories and history gives every project meaning, and sharing work with classmates builds confidence.
