A Challenge in Height and Strength

Our students in grades two through five put their critical thinking skills to work with a tower-building challenge. Their goal was to design a tower that stood 30 centimeters tall and was strong enough to support a golf ball.
The challenge was about more than height. Students needed to think about what would make their towers strong, too.
Learning Together
Students worked together to make various towers. As they worked through the challenge, they began to recognize what it takes to make a structure both tall and strong.
Their work gave them opportunities to communicate effectively and keep trying when the task was challenging.
Building on Our Knowledge
We will continue this activity throughout our semester. Each time, we will build on our knowledge as students work toward developing a model that meets the goals of the task.
I am very proud of our young learners for trying diligently, working through challenges, communicating effectively, and, of course, thinking like future engineers!
