Stepping Into the 1930s

Students arranging historical pictures on a shared 1930s classroom poster

Today we are doing a decade study in our upper elementary and middle school classes. We started the 1930s and covered two defining chapters of the era: the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl.

Visual Learning and Collaboration

We are doing this unit through a visual study of the decade, engaging in various analytical activities. To build a full picture of the 1930s, our students are examining various graphic cards and responding to guided questions while working in groups and collaborating closely with their peers.

Creating Historical Artifacts

All of this analytical work is leading toward our 1930s artifact project. The kids are going to create a poster that analyzes a problem from the 1930s and walks through a potential solution through a graphic representation of a public announcement.
